[L.E.P.A.K series] Chap 22: Goodbye Amsterdam!

We should have seen it coming when we 'decided' to miss our train out of Zaanse Schans. That was the sign of our short streak of unfortunate incidents. *sad face* It all begun while we were waiting for our train to arrive. We knew for sure that the train heading to "Centraal" was our definite ride back to Amsterdam but there was a train scheduled earlier for a different destination. We were not sure if that train will be passing by "Centraal", so we decided to play it safe and wait for our 'sure' train.

To our surprise almost everyone got on the first train that arrived, putting us in a state of indecisiveness. Should we hop on or not? Hop? No hop? Hop? No hop? By the time we were done panicking, the doors have closed and we watched helplessly as everyone leave the station. *double sad face*

We consoled each other by convincing ourselves that playing it safe was the smarter choice and took that extra 20 minutes or so to rest in the quiet train station. Little did we know the bad news that was waiting for us back at Amsterdam.

Upon arriving at Amsterdam Centraal, we hurried off to the ticketing counter to check our train schedule out to Brussels where we will be catching the Eurostar back to London. Our initial plan was to spend around three hours or so to explore Amsterdam itself before heading off. Instead, we were informed that the next train and apparently the only train for us was leaving within the next hour, minus the buffer time we need to be at the platform, all we had was approximately half an hour left. It was a major disappointment!

No time to feel bum though.

Time to make the best of our time at Amsterdam.

No bad news shall stop me from putting a smile on my face.
That's me in front of the iconic Centraal train station.

From here on, we went on a snap and go mode.

Yet, once in a while, we can't help not to stop and stare. *grins*

Look at that crowd!!
If only we had time, we wouldn't mind lining up for some real Hoh-lan-shuuu (apparently Cantonese refers potatoes as Holland Potatoes, not sure why the specific country though, probably because the first imported potatoes were from Holland?) Wait.... going out of topic here. Anyway, it was a bummer we couldn't try the what-we-assumed-to-be-awesome potato wedges. After all, potatoes are Cik Anai's absolute favourite.

Amsterdam is certainly a very *ahem* liberal place for business.
Be mindful that coffee shops here do not necessarily serve you coffee. Hahaha.

This is really an interesting place to be I tell you, and we didn't even make it to the red light district where women parade themselves openly behind (oxymoron? lol.) full length windows.

Even their taxi is one of a kind.

Not to mention the people. Hehe.

That's about as far as we went from Centraal station and we had to
make our way back. *sad face*

Here's another trademark of Amsterdam. The triple X.
You'll see XXX at every possible design anywhere.

*sigh* And with heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Amsterdam. I initially wanted Amsterdam to be just a stop, look, go destination to check it off my travel list. However, I didn't get to finish 'looking', so now I'm left wondering if I will ever be back again to do so.

With our time cut-short at Amsterdam, we found ourselves with some extra time at Brussels-Midi Station instead. So off we went...

Grocery Shopping!!
Hahaha. That my friends, is a giant vending machine! It's crazy, really. I did not even realised I was standing behind one until Cik Anai exclaimed "Omg, that's a vending machine!"

Mind you, this is not where we did our 'shopping'. There is in fact an actual supermarket right behind this vending machine. The funny thing was the entrance of the supermarket was smaller than the machine itself. We went in to scout around for any goodies to buy, like Belgium chocolates!!

We were 'inspecting' the chocolate aisle when a lady beside me, tipped me off in a low voice, saying the chocolates here were outrageous in price. She can get the same chocolates in the same supermarket in town at a much lower price. Well, that's no surprise since Brussels-Midi Station is an Eurostar stop which means a whole lot of tourists commute in and out of the station every day. Tourist spot, ergo tourist pricing. Boohoo.

Since we bought enough chocolates to go around in Zaanse Schans, and since we were specifically told that the chocolates are expensive, we opted not to be 'cheated' and instead stepped out with bottles of mineral water. Hahaha. Water is essential and it is cheaper here than back in London due to the currency exchange. So us 'poor' travellers chose to carry a 1.5 litre bottle each (my vague memory seems to tell me that Cik Anai bought two bottles o.O) just to save ourselves a ringgit or two. So kiam siap right? Hahaha.

And since we still have MORE time. Sigh. How I wish all this time was spent in Amsterdam instead. We chose to sit down and have our third 'sit-down' meal in a row!

Mezzo Di Pasta.
Pasta in take-away boxes like Chinese take-outs in the US of A. *grins* We don't get pasta take-outs like this in Malaysia. But it was not the boxes that made us all giddy with joy...

It's what was inside!
Look at the cheeeeese. Yummmmmmy! Though the entire pasta experience wasn't one to shout about. :P Not exactly awesome stuff but not to bad nonetheless.

With our stomachs filled and loads of water in hand, we catch our night ride back to London for a good night's sleep back in our hotel room. A luxury really, after two days of intense walking and an awkward night on the bus. Hehe. That's the end of our short yet very memorable adventure in Europe.

 Next up, back in London!

[L.E.P.A.K series: Amsterdam] Chapter 21: Brunch at Zaanse Schans

There is no way for one to come all the way to Amsterdam much less Zaanse Schans
and never lay eyes on a pair of clogs. Impossibru!

So it's no surprise that I found myself in a pair of over-sized clogs.

And as if that wasn't enough...

We found ourselves together inside one gigantic clog. Hahaha.
Why does this remind me of the old lady who lives in a shoe?

Hmm... Of course, those giant clogs were meant for photography purposes.

But inside, whoah! It's as if you've stepped into a world of clogs.
From left to right, up and down, you can even find clogs hanging right about you.
Talk about space-efficient display. *grins*

Even Mr Salesman wears a pair.

The more traditional looking clogs.
These are traditional you say? Why yes.
That is if you compare them to...

THESE!!
Totally don't look like clogs right?

There's also super mini clogs, perfect as souvenirs.

Okay okay, I'll stop with the clog overload now. Hehe.

Well, we did not buy any actual clogs but managed to choose a few mini ones to be given as souvenirs to our dear colleagues. That's one of the many perks of travelling with a fellow colleague. Share-share buy souvenirs and therefore, share-share souvenir cost. XD

After that little mini shopping spree, we headed back out to the beautiful scenery outside. That's when our stomachs started to growl, demanding for food, food, glorious food! *excuse my enthusiasm as I had just rewatched Oliver (1968 version a.k.a. the best ever version that pawns over the recent one a few years back) last week* Anyway, leaving London behind and back to Zaanse Schans, there were not many dining options to choose from in this little village. The one main diner is situated right at the centre of the village and was a cosy (or chilly, depending on the weather) pancake house!

That's two proper sit-down-and-enjoy meals in two days! Yay!

Now you might be wondering where’s that signature chapter photo that was supposed
to be right at the top of this post? Well…

.
.
.

TADAA! That’s my brunch right there.
Bacon filled pancake plus a cup of hot chocolate to warm ourselves.
Looks super yummy right? Unfortunately it didn't turn out as good as it looks.
Not so much because of its taste but more so, because bacon wasn't the best
combination for a pancake. A tad too dry in my opinion.

 HOWEVER!

Cik Anai's rum and raisins pancake topped with a beautifully squeezed whipped cream was made of awesome! Superbly yummy. Now the question is why did we choose to sit outside in the cold when we could have enjoyed a more cosy atmosphere indoors?

To enjoy the view of course! *sigh*
For the next 30 minutes or so, we felt that we were living the fine life. Sipping hot chocolate and savouring pancakes with beautiful windmills as backdrop.

By the time we finished our brunch, we saw tour buses arriving and tourists of every possible nationality coming down in hoards. The next time we stepped into a souvenir shop, we found ourselves sharing space with tourists, tourists and more tourists. o__O

We decided then that it was time for us to take our leave as the place was no longer
'belong' to just us, duckie and si manja anymore.

See see! See that gal. Umm… too tiny to spot? Wait I zoom zoom.

There you go! Hopefully she don’t sue me for this.
Whoever you are miss, I envy you, sitting there, all laid-back, reading your favourite book. (Favourite or not, I dunno lah but still so nice right?)

On our walk back to the train station, we met an ice-cream....ummm... truck? mobile? Hahaha. Strangely it was selling Italian gelato though.

Bye bye ice-cream and bye bye Zaanse Schans.

 Next up! Back to Amsterdam.

[L.E.P.A.K series: Amsterdam] Chap 20: Dutch Beauty!

It's time for some pretties again. I foresee there will be more photos than words
in this blog post. What you will see here are some of my favourite shots of Zaanse Schans.

.
.
.
Here we go!

I love this. Cute little pink scooter for two.

Followed by cycling man. *kriing kriing*

The real mirror effect.

Crazy right?

Now back to our usual 'broadcast'. Hehe.
It's the cheese factory and we're customers number one and two!

There was soooo many types of cheese for sale and free samples to try. Hahaha.
The lady explained to us the various types of cheese that were available.
From cow's milk to goat's milk, from plain to mixed herbs, from normal to
smoked cheese. Yummmmy!!

We had to stop ourselves from unashamedly finishing up the smoked cheese with herbs. *embarassed* But it was sooo good that we each bought a chunk home to share with our loved ones. See at least we got buy too. And that's not all we bought. We had our eyes at these Dutch Stroopwafel or *ahem* in English, Syrup Waffles! I've read about how deliciously good they are and boy were the reviews spot on. Once again we found ourselves standing in front of the waffles and munching down at the free samples. Hahaha. To justify our actions, we bought ourselves six packs to take home with. Or at least I think it was six. Could be more. No less though.

And and there was more! We also bought bars and bars of chocolate!
See all that 'free breakfast' is not exactly free after all.

SEE SEE! That's 27.16€.
Which is over a hundred ringgit and you see me enquiring about the windmill pen.
Yikes! Stoooop. I did not buy the pen but I did bought a super cute and big Dutch lady
magnet which costs more than the pen. -.-;;

That's me checking out the stuff I bought. And that's Duckie checking me checking out
the stuff I bought. LOL. There may not be many people around the village but the animals
here is pretty good at this hospitality thing too. Remember Si Manja?

 Anyway, since he's all interested,
I might as well asked him to smile one for the camera.

Nice knowing you Duckie! Thanks for the company.

And there we go pretending to be ladies on the farm. *grins*

Hard at work yo!

I love this shot! *hearts*
This is one way of getting a photo of us together without someone's help. :D

And that marks the end of part two of Zaanse Schans.
I have one more part to go before we head back to Amsterdam. Wee!

[L.E.P.A.K series: Amsterdam] Chap 19: Zaanse Schans!

Eeek! I got distracted from blogging once again. The enthusiasm to finish up
my L.E.P.A.K series had to make way for a new excitement in life.

 Hehe

Hold it.

Hold it!

 :D

 I BOUGHT PLANE TICKETS!

Yes yes. I’m flying again. Weeee… but it’s not till end of the year and this time it’s a family trip! Which means more responsibility. Yikes! So obviously, all that excitement got me into researching mode once again which totally eat into my blogging time. And I don’t even blog thaaaat often. *hopeless* But I can’t help it! I turn into this mad scientist, crazy planner, travel enthusiast whenever it comes to things like these. Though two days ago, I found out Cik Ipoh’s sister is at a whole different level from me. *respect*

So yeah. This blogging thing that’s happening right here. This is a result of discipline.
I told myself  “You gotta do it this weekend yo!” So here I am and here we go,
off to Zaanse Schans!

Zaanse Schans is only four stops away from Amsterdam Central Station and approximately 20 minutes ride by train. The station to hop off is Koog Zaandijk. I don't have the faintest idea how Dutch words are pronounced. How do you even pronounce 'dijk'? Hmm...

From the station, we just followed the signs, enjoyed our stroll and took in the views. But we didn't make it very far before we got distracted. Right next to the station was a field of gold, so pretty enough that had us two silly girls wondering into it for some silly shots.

Right out of a Hindi movie. Hehe.

There were many interesting buildings along the way.
From a cute 'tak-halal' house sign to...

...a vine-wrapped home that screams "Stay away!" with a sense of artistic appreciation.
Everything just seems a tad more interesting when you are away from home.

Finally we saw the first sight of a windmill! Peekaboo! See how empty the road is, that's the beauty of beating the morning crowd. It's like having the entire place to ourselves.

"Look ma! That's a windmill."

As we made a turn towards the bridge, we were immediately greeted by an outrageously beautiful scene in front of us. So outrageous that we can't helped continuously exclaiming our awe to each other. As for our inner thoughts... all I had was "You gotta be kidding me!"

How can a place be that tranquil and beautiful where everything is just so calm
yet so breathtaking? We tried to capture this beauty with our cameras
but I doubt our photos can do this place justice.

Is this even real? *sigh*

One compulsory "I was here! This is amazing." shot.

Look at that smile on Cik Anai's face. She is at a photographer's heaven.
Her shutter just kept on going. *click, click, click*

*points* We are here!

We actually downloaded this map from Zaanse Schan's website prior to our trip and had the print in our hands but to be honest you can just throw that away and explore the place on your own. It's basically one main trail that works its way around the entire village, so you won't actually miss anything.

There was actually no one around so it was a pleasant surprise when we were
greeted by a 'local'. Well, sort of... hahaha

Meet our feline friend who came forward without hesitation as we approached the village. Very manja and totally not shy of strangers. Well, I believe it sees thousands of guests every day. We're probably very insignificant to it after all. :P

While we were busy entertaining the cat. Yup, definitely not the other way round. We finally met the first group of people here at Zaanse Schans. A group of young and joyful teens cycling merrily around the village.

How much countryside can it get?

*hearts*

Notice the unique architectural style of the Dutch since the last post? From the signature tall and narrow buildings along the canal to these unique green cottages, you can easily get fridge magnets of all the different types of building as cute little souvenirs to take home with you. All I have to say is that I regret not buying more of these little fellas.

Even the trees are a tad eccentric, don't you think?

Here's one last picturesque shot before I end this post. *sigh in contentment* Cik Anai commented that this was the best 'walk' yet because it was the most relaxing and 'crowdless' of all which brings out the lovely countryside beauty even more. Because seriously, imagine this place filled with tourists at every corner you turn, it just ruins the mood don't you think?

So like how 'Tai-lou' Big Bird had said it,
"The early bird do catches the worm."

Till next time! :)
